Quiksand

Laying adrift a bed made of quicksand
Each grain slips through the lines in our hands
Each one a promise and dream unfulfilled
A hole at the bottom keeps out the shells
I fall away from the heat and now I’m lost at sea
A tide rolls passed with you on top of me
I falter and flail but the lighthouse looks bleak
An early night for the watcher whose eyes couldn’t keep
By dawn the shore is littered with trash
Lifeless bodies sit like craters who crashed
Letters haphazardly written by moonlight
Rest in bottles without corks, an address or postage
A lifeguard steps up to his post for the day
The flags wave wildly keeping tourists away
I climb ashore, grabbing a bucket and pail
She’s carving moats and reinventing the wheel
By dusk the castle is fit for a king
Decorated with plastic and recycled mail
The wind picks up and the guard steps down
He turns to leave and the sirens sound
Scouring the beach for any indication
That little girl and her mother, where were they playing?
A mistake or malfunction, the silence looms overhead
An empty beach lies before him without so much as a footprint

Driveway

Ten years to the day
I hold it in
I keep it safe
An engine idles in the driveway
Upholstery still stained
Ten years to the day
I hold it close
I take it with me
Replace the breaks
Oil the chain
An engine idles in the driveway
Put pencil to the page
An outline to trace
Deep rest and a dotted eighth
Breathe it in here with me
Tell me what to say
I let it ring
I let it ring
Why wait
Why wait
Ten years to the day
I hold it in
I keep it safe
Ten years to the day
I hold it close
I take it with me
Ten years to the day
I hold it in
I keep it safe
Ten years to the day
I hold it close
I take you with me
Replace the breaks
Oil the chain
An engine idles in the driveway

Without You
03:13
|
|||
It came rushing in like a landslide
I felt your heart beating, steady pulse in my side
All choked up soon as I heard you say
The words I’d been repeating but couldn’t appreciate
It knocked me to the ceiling
Realizing my mistake
Wanted to turn myself in
But for what, who and when
Only one thing was certain and I had to find out
Didn’t know if I deserved it but I had to know now
Cause I don’t want to live without you
Feels like I’ve been missing out
Don’t know what I’m still waiting for
Shrouded in a cloak of doubt
If there was ever any other way
To have you by my side
Know I’d give up everything
Just for the chance to try
It’s leading me down a dark winding tunnel
All the lights that lined the way burnt out
Reached for support but the walls have crumbled
Swept away by the rocks as they fell
And I feel you watching as I hunt for the exit
A door opens and two hands guide me to it
Start to feel like I'm falling as I’m jolted awake
And there you are by my side still sound asleep

Butterflies
02:31
|
|||
It’s a little lost on me
Why you’re here
On this date
At this hour
Catch your footing
Pull up a chair
Do you feel that
Wings aflutter
Particles dismissed
Hangtime in air
An ambush without a plan
A faulty flare
Full fledged attack
Retreat, get back
Distract
Bullets through the glass
Heat rising from the friction
Hesitation
Another impact
Repeat, get back
Frayed bristles
A fallen rope
An open window
A steady scope
Particles dismissed
Hangtime in air
Friendly fire
A faulty flare

Such Great Heights
03:00
|
|||
I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate
That God Himself did make
Us into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay
And true it may seem like a stretch
But it's thoughts like this that catch
My troubled head when you're away
And when I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road
For several weeks of shows
And when you scan the radio
I hope this song will guide you home
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now, they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
I tried my best to leave
This all on your machine
But the persistent beat
It sounded thin upon listening
And that frankly will not fly
You'll hear the shrillest highs
And lowest lows with the windows down
And this is guiding you home
And they will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
They will see us waving from such great heights
Come down now they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away
Come down now but we'll stay
